2 months agoIt is a historic 17th-century mosque located on the left bank of the Jala River in the city of Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was first mentioned in 1600 under the name Sedefkâr (Mehmed Ağa, master of mother-of-pearl inlay). Limited information about Mehmed Agha is available, and there are no definitive historical records regarding his identity. However, it is generally believed that the mosque was built in the early 17th century and that its founder was Mehmed Agha. It was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2019. Next to the mosque is the tomb of Mehmed Teufik Azabagić, who served as Grand Mufti of Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1893 and 1909. The mosque was originally built of mud bricks and covered with a red-tiled dome. During renovations in 1891, a brick dome was added under the dome, but it collapsed in 1928. Subsequently, a thatched roof was constructed, obscuring the original dome. Jalska Mosque, Mehmedağa Mosque, Kızlar Mosque (Kızlar Džamija), Hafız Hanım Mosque. Where do names come from? Kızlar Mosque: According to a popular legend, a young girl sold her dowry and had the mosque restored. For this reason, the mosque was called the "Girls' Mosque." The girl's tomb was built in the mosque's courtyard in 1848. Hafız Hanım Mosque: When the mosque fell into disrepair in 1890, it was completely rebuilt by a woman named Hafız Hanım Tuzlić. For this reason, the mosque was also known for a time as the "Hafız Hanım Mosque." The name "Jalska" derives from the mosque's geographical location: it lies on the banks of the Jala River in Tuzla. The word "Jalska" means "belonging to Jala" or "near the Jala River." This type of naming is widespread in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and place names are often formed after the river, neighborhood, or region in which they are located.
