A winter hike to the largest continuously flowing waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
We start our hike in the village of Nahorevo, just on the outskirts of Sarajevo, and climb the slopes of Bukovik Mountain. With each step, the stunning views of the mountains to the south improve as we continue hiking to the top of Skakavac Waterfall.
Skakavac Waterfall is one of the largest and most attractive continuously flowing waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina and represents a real tourist attraction. The waterfall is 98 meters high and is located in a landscape of exceptional beauty. The surroundings are among the most heterogeneous areas in this region, dominated by spruce and beech forests, as well as spruce forests on more pronounced slopes. On shallow carboniferous soils near the waterfall, thermophilic forests and thickets of eastern hornbeam and autumn locust, as well as eastern hornbeam and ash trees are found. The rocks around the waterfall have very interesting vegetation, dominated by endemic and relict species. Skakavac Waterfall is among the most attractive tourist sites near Sarajevo for several reasons. The name "Skakavac" means "locust".
A relaxing break with tea or coffee awaits us here before we descend through dense forest to the base of the waterfall. Here, a fantastic view of the water, the mist and the forest awaits us - transformed into a fabulous frozen waterfall - an impressive wall of ice that touches the sky high above.
From here we find our way back through the forest to Nahorevo, where we parked our car, filled with impressions of the day.
