Holidays in Bosnia on a budget

In this post I will show you how to organize a holiday in Bosnia on a budget and still enjoy the stunning scenery, rich cultural heritage and friendly people.

Traveling doesn't have to be expensive, especially if Bosnia and Herzegovina is on your list of dream destinations. From budget accommodation to cheap food options to low-cost activities, here are the keys to having a fantastic trip in Bosnia without breaking the bank.

Holidays in Bosnia on a small budget

In this section, I will provide details about accommodation options, their price ranges and factors that affect their affordability. For a vacation in Bosnia on a budget, you have several options available:

  • Hostels and guesthouses offer economical alternatives and allow you to immerse yourself in the local culture and network with other travelers. Hostels offer dorm or private room options, while guesthouses offer personalized service and a homely atmosphere. Prices range from $20 to $50 per night, with many establishments offering safety measures - check details on their website or booking platform.
  • Motels are budget-friendly and conveniently located, often along highways and major roads for easy accessibility.
  • Apartments, located outside urban centers along rivers or on the lakeshore, offer unique experiences, scenic views and privacy. These often include spacious apartments or villas with multiple bedrooms and living areas that are not too expensive. Aside from accommodation type and luxury level (including amenities and service), prices are influenced by season and location. Peak tourism periods (summer and fall) may have slightly higher prices compared to off-season months. In addition, accommodation in large cities or tourist hotspots is usually more expensive than options in smaller towns or rural areas. In general, Bosnia offers affordable accommodation costs, with most establishments offering excellent service and hospitality.

Eating out in Bosnia offers good value for money compared to other European destinations. In this section, I will provide an overview of the cost-effectiveness of eating out in Bosnia that will be part of your Bosnia vacation on a budget, as well as insights into traditional Bosnian cuisine.

Food prices in Bosnia vary by region, tending to be higher in large cities and tourist resorts, while smaller towns and rural areas tend to have lower prices. Additionally, prices can fluctuate due to inflation and seasonal factors, so it's wise to check current prices and get recommendations from locals or previous visitors. Many restaurants also maintain active social media profiles where you can find menus and pricing details. As mentioned, food in Bosnia is generally more affordable than in many Western European countries. A meal at a mid-priced cafe or restaurant serving traditional Bosnian cuisine can cost between 7 and 15 euros per person.

Restaurants that serve salads, vegetarian dishes and non-traditional Bosnian food all charge the same price. Of course, the price range for this type of restaurant varies from 5 to 15 euros. Since some establishments offer a variety of coffees and milk options, the coffee there is often more expensive.

In Bosnia, snacks and street food are even more affordable. Bakeries and food stalls offer a variety of Bosnian sandwiches and delicacies. In this case, a lunch will cost between two and five euros.

When drinking, you must try Bosnian coffee. It is like Turkish coffee, strong, dark and served in small specially decorated cups. Bosnian coffee is known for its preparation process and cultural significance. It is often inexpensive, costing between one and two euros in cafes, and some cafes include free sweets with it. The price of alcohol varies depending on location and type, including traditional drinks and regional wines.

When it comes to the cost of food and drinks as part of your holiday in Bosnia on a budget, I think they are fair because you get delicious meals made according to traditional recipes and with high quality ingredients.
