Great hikes on the lush green slopes of the Zelengora Mountains, exquisite views of the rugged border of Bosnia and Herzegovina and climbing Maglić, the highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina!
Day 1:
After a two-hour drive through gorges and forests, we reach the oldest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Not far from there, we drive up a gravel road into the heart of the park – Zelengora. In Donje Bare, we park the vehicle and take a short walk to leave our backpacks in the newly built mountain hut in Donje Bare. Donje Bare lake is surrounded by dense forests on one side and open mountain meadows on the other. We pass it on our way to the Ugljesin peak at 1,858 m. It is no coincidence that we chose the pyramid peak as our destination. From here, the highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Maglić at 2,386 meters) towers above us, as does the rock wall barrier of Volujak and the 1,200-meter-deep gorge of the Sutjeska river. We return to the hut via Gornje Bare and complete the fantastic four-hour hike.

Day 2:
For today we offer two options; a moderate hike to Trnovacko Lake or a challenging hike to the top of Maglić, the highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Today, the drive to the medieval Peručica forest takes just over 45 minutes. The park is a real gem in terms of wildlife and a large number of endemic plants. The park also includes the highest and most impressive mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Maglić, named after the thick fog that often surrounds its rocky peak. We stop briefly at Dragos Sedlo with its colorful view of one of the two remaining medieval forests in Europe – Peručica. Out of eternity, we are greeted by a lonely waterfall “Skakavac” that plunges 75 meters into the dark spruce and beech forest of Peručica.
Here we split the group into those interested in a challenging four-hour hike to Maglić at 2,386 m and those who prefer a moderate two-hour hike to Trnovacko Lake. At the end of the day we all meet again at Trnovacko glacial lake, located in the middle of a huge amphitheater of rocky peaks at 1,500 meters.
After a well-deserved rest, we head back to the vehicle and return to Sarajevo, impressed by our adventure in Sutjeska National Park, what we experienced and the natural beauty we discovered.
